Along with heredity, stress is probably one of the most common factors for hair loss. Many people, especially professional soldiers and other people with highly stressful jobs, have reported loosing a significant amount of hair as a result of a single stressful event. A young UK soldier serving in Iraq said that he lost all of his body hair after a close combat mission in 2005, and the man is bald and completely hairless to this day.
Prior to the discussion of the connection between stress and hair loss, let us first consider what exactly stress is and how it affects the human body. In general, stress is defined as "an excessive demand upon physical or mental energy” which, in most cases, is very hard to deal with. To put it more simply, stress comes when one loses control on his or her problems. Also, stress is constantly present in our everyday life to a greater or lesser extent. Sudden and abrupt changes such as the loss of a loved one, moving houses, changing school and moving to live and work in another country are very often highly stressful, especially to children and teenagers.
There are many explanations as to why and how stress and hair loss are connected, but the simplest one seems to be that hair loss comes as a warning sign that there is too much stressful things in our life. As stress is a psychical and not so much physical factor for hair loss, specialists recommend that one changes his or her way of life and eradicates all things that cause him or her to feel sad or anxious. If you work long hours, study hard or have a strenuous relationship, you may notice a significant amount of hair on your pillow when you wake up in the morning. This is a warning sign that stress has set in.
In general, your doctor may prescribe some hair strengthening supplements combined with vitamins, but it will be even better if you add a lot of outdoor activities, sports, active socializing and a lot of fun to the hair loss treatment. This will help you regain control on you life and your hair will start growing normally again. |
