People tend to lose hair as they age, but it is a fact that men do it to a larger degree – earlier and faster. There are various reasons for male baldness but when it affects men aged 20 or even younger, the chance is (over 90 percent) that male pattern baldness (also referred to as MPB) causes the balding process. MPB is also known as Androgenetic alopecia. The term “androgenetic” simply means that a combination of male hormones (androgens) and heredity (genetics) is required to develop the condition.

Androgenetic alopecia or MPB is characterized by a receding hairline and gradual thinning of the men’s hair from the top of the head. Male pattern baldness can strike even 15 – 16-year old boys but normally, the process starts at the late teen years or early 20s. About 25 percent of all men began to suffer from MPB before they reached their 30s and approximately 66 percent are either bald or have a balding pattern by the age of 60. So, the average age of hair loss due to Androgenetic alopecia is 37.
