Alopecia areata or spot baldness is an autoimmune skin disease which leaves circular bald patches on the scalp. All of the factors, causing this condition, are still unknown, but medical specialists believe that they are a combination of some environmental factors (a pathogen or emotional stress) and heredity. Alopecia areata can progress into two severe forms: Alopecia totalis which affects the whole scalp and Alopecia universalis which causes hair loss all over the body.
The Alopecia areata treatment includes hair growth stimulation by steroid injections in the affected areas, but this treatment is not recommended in case of large bald spots. Alternative medications (such as oral steroids and creams) and treatments (like ultraviolet light therapy) might have some undesirable side effects. In most cases of Alopecia areata, hair grows back within a year.

In any case, hair loss is not a desirable condition, but men are more likely to suffer the fate of baldness than women are. Women place a great value on hair because they assume it makes a significant attribute of their personality. However, males also consider that bald skulls turn them unattractive or indicate their progressive aging. So, it is very hard for both, man and women to deal with the new situation: they usually feel very bad and ashamed of their new outer appearance.

Hair loss is typically an aesthetic concern rather than a health issue, but the problem should not be overlooked. Sometimes, the condition might be a symptom of an underlying disease. One of the world’s most renowned organizations which deal with hair loss treatment and prevention is the American Hair Loss Association (AHLA). In the past few years, its experts have developed a set of highly-efficient and widely affordable hair loss treatment methods, outlined briefly below.

The real breakthrough in the treatment of men’s hair loss came with the invention of the 5-a-reductase inhibitors such as Propecia. Propecia Finasteride was originally developed by Merck pharmaceuticals as a drug intended for the treatment of prostate gland enlargement. However, hair growth was observed as an unexpected side effect, while the medicine was clinically tested on men.  Following additional research and clinical trials, on December 22, 1997, the US Food and Drug Administration approved a 1miligram dose of Finasteride for the treatment of the male pattern baldness. Researchers have found out that Finasteride’s hair-raising effect is due to its ability to inhibit Type II 5-alpha-reductace: an enzyme that converts testosterone into a more potent androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In turn, this substance causes an androgenic alopecia in men.
