Alopecia areata or spot baldness is an autoimmune skin disease which leaves circular bald patches on the scalp. All of the factors, causing this condition, are still unknown, but medical specialists believe that they are a combination of some environmental factors (a pathogen or emotional stress) and heredity. Alopecia areata can progress into two severe forms: Alopecia totalis which affects the whole scalp and Alopecia universalis which causes hair loss all over the body.
The Alopecia areata treatment includes hair growth stimulation by steroid injections in the affected areas, but this treatment is not recommended in case of large bald spots. Alternative medications (such as oral steroids and creams) and treatments (like ultraviolet light therapy) might have some undesirable side effects. In most cases of Alopecia areata, hair grows back within a year.
Psoriasis is another autoimmune skin condition which can cause temporary hair loss. Different doctors use various treatments for this condition: medications, laser, or other therapy. However, there are some common tips for controlling Psoriasis hair loss:
- Use medical treatment not for the hair but for the scalp.
- Treat hair with gentle brushing and combing.
- Alter shampoos (a medicated shampoo with non-medicated one).
- Apply a mild non-medicated conditioner after every use of shampoo.
- Do not use any blow-dryers and styling products.
And a last piece of advice: consult your dermatologist because psoriasis might be a by-factor for hair loss or just a symptom of any other serious disease.
Seborrheic alopecia is a result of hypersecretion of the sebaceous glands: the scalp and hair become extremely greasy. This condition is usually caused by various internal and external factors, such as stress, excessive intellectual activity, severe weight-loss diets, heredity, vitamin deficiency, environmental pollution, etc. Seborrheic alopecia causes long-lasting hair loss and Aloe vera is the best remedy for this problem. There is a myriad of hair cosmetic products which contain some extract of the herb but for better results, you can massage your hair with a mixture of Aloe vera oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, shea butter, herbs, and vitamins.
