There are various opinions, when discussing the causes of hair loss. Whereas genetics and healthy diet are uniformly considered as the major determinants, temporal factors are not as commonly acknowledged. Some doctors claim that hair loss is not affected by seasonal changes. The scientific explanation is that the hair cycle in men is asynchronous, meaning that they shed their hair at the same rate during the whole period of around 36 months, in which a hair goes through the growing, resting and shedding phases. Humans loose approximately a hundred hairs every day, and healthy organisms replace them with new ones. In cases of hair loss this pattern is broken. On the other hand, animals have synchronous hair loss cycle. They molt every year in the spring, when their hair is in resting, and in the autumn, when the growth commences.
However, there are theories, according to which there exists a pattern for alterations on the intensity of shedding, depending on the season. In winter for example, the hair grows progressively but in spring, the shedding might double, reaching its peak in the autumn. This dependency, however, is strictly individual and not pre-programmed in humans like it is in animals. One of the reasons for this phenomenon is the anagen phase. In summer, most of the hair is in this stage of the cycle (growing), but in winter they go into resting. Also, the male hair loss is linked to the levels in testosterone, which vary seasonally. This is the most important hormone, when it comes to balding. Its imbalance causes balding patches, mostly in men, but also in women.
Another important circumstance for hair loss is pregnancy. Most women experience it, because their hormones are in a limbo. Mostly, it happens after pregnancy and is actually falling out of hair, which has grown in excess in the period of increased estrogen during the carrying. As both cases, female and male hair loss demonstrate, hormonal misbalance is one of the major causes for this conditions. For this reason, people are strongly advised to consult with an endocrinologist, among other specialists, in search for the precise reason for their condition.
